Mt. Danxia is situated at the border of three provinces , Hunan, Jiangxi and Guangdong in R enhua Count y , 45 km from Guangdong's Shaoguan city. It is a National Scenic Spot, National Natural Protection Zone for Geology and Geomorphology in China, Grade AAAA National Tourist Spot, and National Geological Park of China, and widely known as the ¡°China's Red Stone Park¡±. Mt. Danxia was awarded the title as a UNESCO Geopark by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on 13 th Feburary 2004. It spans 290km 2 and is the place where ¡°the Danxia Landform¡± is named after. Mt. Danxia is characterized by the Cretaceous red terrestrial sandstones and conglomerates in a variety of forms, which holds great appeal for scientists and tourists alike from all over the world.
According to the Chinese legend of Lady Nuwa created mankind here, using 5-colored stones to patch the sky, rested here after that and transformed into stone. Emperor Shun also named 36 stones while travelling through this place on holiday. Since then, poets, scholars and monks frequented this area, creating a region prosperous and rich in culture. There's currently 4 areas developed for tourism, Zhanglao Peak, Xianglong Lake, Jinjiang River and Yangyuan Stone areas. |
